Mission

Speaking4Earth is an accessible international (digital) platform for and about (5.000) indigenous peoples and their vision, on which the international community signs petitions (urgent actions) to support international lobby for indigenous rights all over the world. Through the urgent actions, the platform monitors de UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Urgency
There is very little progress in the recognition and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples although serious infringements on their lands and life is ongoing on a global scale. The media only pay little or no attention to these situations. At the same time there is a sense of urgency around the world that our planet Earth is getting out of balance through the continuous emission of carbon, depletion of natural resources and pollution of the environment and that it will ultimately affect all of us. Indigenous peoples, with the deep spiritual connection they often have to their land, including the sky, the rivers, the soil and all living creatures, are increasingly seen today as a source of inspiration for a different relation with our world.

Effect of petitions
Petitions are a lobby instrument which is used by several recognized organisations like Amnesty International, Oxfam, Global Response and Friends of the Earth. All signees together write a letter to governments, multinationals and international institutes, or anyone can write a letter himself. It has proven to be often an effective way of intervention. Governments are usually very sensitive for international critics and companies are careful about their image. The petitions are often taken up by journalists and through this the cases get even more attention which supports the effect of the action. According to Friends of the Earth, 1 of the 3 petitions succeed in its goal.
